Occasionally, people are stressed out because their team prioritizes business needs over user needs. They might say, “Our team needs to increase transactions. So, we need to build this banner.”
It’s strange.
When I speak at a webinar or workshop, people ask me, “What should we do if my team prioritizes business needs?”
I always have difficulty answering this question because it misses the point. Many people see business needs conflicting with user needs. In reality, they are not.
Think about it. Why do people use and pay for products like Spotify or Netflix? Fundamentally, it is because Netflix delivers value for users. And that’s the reason so many users pay Netflix. Netflix creates value for users. Without Netflix, people have to buy or rent DVDs. Then, Netflix can capture value by charging users.
So, when your boss or team wants to increase the number of transactions, you start with a business goal. But you can take it one step further. Think, what user problems should we solve to increase the transactions?
Business needs and user needs should be connected.
P.S. I’m opening a small workshop called Product Discovery Workshop. It’s for product designers who want to be more strategic in identifying user problems. It’s for you who want to learn how to make something people want.

Hi Budi, I'm Daniel
Nice to meet you :)
Fully agree, some people forget if the business would be nothing if they didn't have customer or user. Usually i try to asking back and find out the root mindset of "increase transaction" is it already pass the research or just an assumption.
