Two modes: Browsing or locating
Some users browse. Some locate a specific thing.
Users are either browsing or locating.
Think about when you open Gmail.
You might browse what's in your inbox.
Or you look for a specific item, perhaps searching for a receipt.
Next time you design a navigation or homepage, consider accommodating these two modes.
For example, users who want to locate a specific thing could use a search on the eCommerce site. Users who want to browse would look around the list of things.
