Your boss tells you to build a feature. Then what? You might jump and build that idea. But you know there’s a risk: you launch it and no one uses it. Here's the thing: you can’t argue with opinion. But I think there’s a better way to execute.
1.
Impact. That’s what we want to make. To do that, we need to execute well. This is what I call Product Execution: It is a combination of analysis and doing. Strong product crafters can do four things well. One, they have a direction and clear intention about the feature. Two, they know how to discover users’ problems worth solving. Three, they build effective and creative solutions to solve that problem. Four, they deliver it well to the world and assess the results.
2.
In Q1 2023, we will explore this Product Execution framework. This is for you (PM or Product Designers) who are working on a feature and want to optimize it. It's for you who transitioned to product recently. This framework will help you strengthen your fundamentals of product execution.
1 - Define the feature strategy. This includes asking questions like: Who is this feature for? What problem are we trying to solve? How is this feature contribute to the whole product? We will evaluate the features by looking at adoption, retention, and satisfaction.
2 - Problem & Solution discovery. We’ll also discuss how to discover problems worth solving from users. This includes talking to users and synthesizing the insights. We design a creative solution to solve the problems in a way that fits the business strategy.
3 - Development. This is when we write PRD. Start to coordinate with engineers and the ops team. We will solidify the launch plan to ensure everyone understands the goal of this launch or release.
4 - Launch and iterate. We deliver the feature to create and capture value. But is it successfully achieved that? Here, we’ll discuss how we can evaluate the performance and craft the post-launch communication.
3.
This newsletter will expand itself to be a community. It’s not a casual community. It’s a learning community. I don’t plan to have a Slack channel. The primary tool we will use is Discourse—a forum. We will discuss about challenges we have and share how we apply the ideas from this newsletter. You can connect with like-minded people. People who want to grow and learn. People who are generous in sharing their experiences.

P.S. After quitting my job, I finally have a chance to plan out and set a vision for where I want to bring this newsletter. I’m looking forward to having a discussion with you in 2023. But now, let’s enjoy the holiday. Have a great time!
